548 Zinfandel…

So Mike Schmidt attached his name to a wine called 548 Zinfandel with a percentage of the profits going to charity. That’s all well and nice. But what I don’t get is that Michael Jack was on all the local philly tv shows pimping the wine. Telling people to go online and order it. He did not mention whether it would be available in stores.
Slight problem…you can’t ship wine to Pennsylvania. It’s illegal. So no one in Philly can order it online. I don’t understand why Schmidt and the wine people would want to go to all the trouble to advertise it to a population that can’t purchase it?
Granted the Philly stations serve more than just PA, but still southern NJ is a small crowd. I guess raising awareness alone could be a good marketing idea, but will people really go out of their way to buy a 20 dollar bottle of wine? Will people from other cities buy a Mike Schmidt wine? I have no desire to go out and get a bottle of David Ortiz’s Vintage Papi, Kevin Youkilis’ Sauvignyoouuk, or Tom Glavine’s Cabernet Glavingon. So why would anyone outside of Philly want some 548 Zinfandel versus any other red zinfandel.
In full disclosure, I might buy a bottle of Johan Santana’s Santana’s Select, but that is more because of my man crush on the greatest pitcher in the world…but that’s a whole other post and therapy session.
I don’t know, I just don’t get it.
