Operation Movie Junkie…

I consider myself a bigger than average movie fan, which is the main motivation for this site. But a couple of my friends have called that into question. Below is a list of movies that they consider required viewing, films that I have not seen. I’ve decided to turn this into my summer project. I will attempt to watch each film on the list along with other films that many other people consider classics before September. Wish me luck.

Friends Requirements:
A Clockwork Orange
American History X
Apocalypse Now
Casino
Deliverance
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Scarface
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
The Great Escape
This is Spinal Tap
Unforgiven
My Requirements:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Being John Malkovich
The Big Sleep
Blazing Saddles
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Citizen Kane
Cool Hand Luke
Doctor Zhivago
The French Connection
It Happened One Night
The Man Who Knew Too Much

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
North by Northwest
Raging Bull
Rashomon
Seven Samurai

Update: Count is now at 30 films in 76 days.

Jumper…

In every crappy sci-fi movie they have the inevitable five minute scene where they attempt to explain all the crazy crappyness that makes the basis of their film. Unfortunately that scene never happens; instead we get the Hansel and Gretel treatment with crumbs of information thrown out here and there. None of which ever add up to a semi full answer.

How do the Paladins (those would be Samual L Jackson’s team) have such power and influence yet stay so secret? How is it that no one has tried to turn the Jumpers into a weapon? If there really was a war between Jumpers and Paladins why are there only two Jumpers? What’s the deal with Diane Lane’s character? How does Anakin not ask these questions during the course of the film?

Ugh, whatever just jump to a better movie and forget this dribble.

Roku’s Netflix Player Day 1…

Its here, setup, and running. It was up and running in literally 5 minutes. The longest part was fishing the power cable to the device. Once powered on everything was a breeze.

The player will choose the streaming quality based on the connection speed that it detects. So with my five mbit connection I was expecting 100% quality 100% of the time with my entire normal bandwidth load. However that took a little bit of work. Initially I set it up to use my wireless connection (802.11g), and while it worked, I found getting a four star quality connection to be extremely difficult. Even with my connection completely quiet I would still bounce between two stars to four stars, with two and three being the quality setting the majority of the time. So I switch it to Ethernet and things started to work much much better.

So how’s the quality? At 100% it looks exactly like standard definition signal on a high definition TV, which isn’t dvd quality (well maybe on a shitty dvd player with a dvd with an absolute crap transfer). But that is what I was expecting. It’s completely watchable, and considering that most of the Watch Instantly titles are either tv shows or older movies I don’t see any problems. At the lower streams was very reminiscent of a high quality you tube video being shown at full screen.

Going forward I definitely want to see HD Streams with many more titles available, specifically newer releases. And I want all that sooner rather than later.

More photos can be found here.

Day 1 Review Score: *** (Completely worth 100 bucks).

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull…

It is just horrible, the worst of the entire series. God how I wished Short Round would just show up and save the day. It wasn’t even enjoyable. Going in I knew it probably wasn’t going to be great, but hey, it’s Spielberg and Lucas it should at least be enjoyable. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! There were so many stupid scenes; such a waste of time. Don’t even waste your time thinking about it.
